Types of Cloth and Cleaning Options
Cleaning your pool table becomes more artform and less necessity depending on the type of cloth you select for your table. Here’s a hint: the best cloth (worsted) is more expensive but easier to clean. And if you keep it clean, you may never have to replace it.
They call it Worsted but it’s the best
Worsted cloth is a superior product often used for tournament play. The wool on worsted cloth is sheer cut to reduce the nap and fuzziness on the surface. Worsted cloth provides faster play and overall long-term better performance. Worsted cloth is more expensive than napped cloth due to the higher expense of the weaving process.
Napped cloth – less costly
Napped cloth has a taller texture created by the fibers that, when trained, should all point in one direction making a smooth surface for the ball. It requires more maintenance and brushing than worsted cloth and tends to cause the ball to roll slower. This slower speed is suitable for recreational players and is less expensive than worsted cloth.
When choosing your playing surface, remember that it costs anywhere from $270 to $550 to replace your pool tablecloth. For this reason, many choose worsted cloth for increased wearability and longer lasting material.
There are commercial cleaners for pool tablecloth that provide a dry clean, but I don’t believe it’s necessary. There are also pool table and ball cleaning services available, but they are not cheap. To choose the right option for you and your pool table, be sure to consult with your local pool table retailer before you make any purchases.
Both cloths are available with optional Teflon added to protect against spills and stains, but you still must clean the table regularly for maximum performance and longer life span. Remember, it’s your table. And if you’re serious about your pool game, “man up” and clean it yourself. If you do it right, it’s an artform.
